title pic Book Review: Sacrifice By Nadia Bashoo

This really is a vampire novel with a difference. Suspense, danger, romance… Sacrifice has it all.

For a vampire, Lysander is as ruthless as they come. He has prowled the earth for almost two centuries, terrorising his fellow supernatural creatures and feeding off humans at will. However, all this is about to change. Lured into a trap set by an enemy coven, Lysander drinks the contaminated blood of a witch and contracts a fatal disease. The only thing that can save him is the blood of a human girl, who willingly sacrifices her life for his. It seems an impossible feat, but Lysander is determined to track down such a girl before it is too late.

At seventeen, Karen already has more than enough on her plate. Saddled with an irresponsible mother, who is interested in nothing but stumbling from one bad relationship to the next, she is left having to bring up her younger sister single-handed whilst trying to keep up with her studies. Then she meets Lysander at the pub where she works and her life is turned upside-down. What Karen considers to be an instant connection soon takes a darker turn, plunging her into the dangerous world of the supernatural.

Phil, on the other hand, has known about the supernatural world since it struck at the heart of his family, tearing it apart. Seeking vengeance, he joined a secret society dedicated to the eradication of all supernatural creatures. When his boss sends him on a mission to track down and kill Lysander, he is only too happy to oblige. Yet, when he meets Karen, the situation gets a whole lot more complicated. Not only does he start to fall in love, he is forced to confront the possibility that his ideals aren’t as clear-cut as he has come to believe.

Brilliantly plotted and packed with characters you’ll both love and hate, this novel will take you on an emotional journey full of twists and turns. You won’t be able to put the book down as the fate of the protagonists grows increasingly entwined, until Karen, caught between her growing feelings for Phil and her compassion for Lysander, has to make an impossible choice. At the end, I was left with one overriding question. Most of us would like to think we’d die for those we love, but would you ever give up your life to save a monster?

Recommended for anyone looking for a gritty, more realistic take on the vampire genre.
